What is the Thousand Guineas?

Established in 1946, the Thousand Guineas is a Group One race for three-year-old fillies only. It is run with set weights over 1600 metres at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne’s south-east suburbs.

The Thousand Guineas has held Group One status since the current rating system was introduced in 1979. Before that it was always classed as a Principal Race – the highest level at the time.

In a purely fiscal sense, the Thousand Guineas pales in comparison to Melbourne’s most prestigious group races. The total purse in 2017 was $500,000 – exactly 1/10 the value of the Caulfield Cup.

List of Thousand Guineas winners

Champions to have won the Thousand Guineas include Atlantic Jewel in 2011, Miss Finland in 2006 and Alinghi in 2004. Due to the race’s age restriction, no horse has won it on multiple occasions.

Thousand Guineas past payouts

In 2014, the Chris Waller-trained Amicus won by 0.75 of a length and paid a handsome +1000 on the tote. Traveston Girl and Sabatini made up the minors and the exotic payouts were well worth investing. The trifecta paid $1714.00 and the first four paid a whopping $11,141.80 with Bring Me The Maid running into fourth position late in the piece.

Just to show the Thousand Guineas doesn’t always favour the each way bettors, in 2013 the Peter Snowden-trained Guelph justified its favourite’s tag at a slim -250. May’s Dream and Gregers made up the minors for a $14.40 trifecta.

In 2012, however, Commanding Jewel won paying +640 with Dear Demi (+270) and Zydeco (+300) completing the podium. The first four again proved worth targeting when it returned $13,153.30.
